Week 13 : (May 27)
A student asked about using "despite" vs. "although" etc. Here's a link that might help.
Also, we discussed how to use 'although'. Must it be followed by a subject and verb?
Although it is usually warm, Miami can be chilly in December.
VS
Although usually warm, Miami can be chilly in December.

Miami, although usually warm, can be chilly in December.
Most grammar guides say that a subject/verb/object must follow 'although', in other words an independent clause, I think the S/V/O can often be found in other parts of the sentence.
Today we peer edited Compare Contrast Essay Draft 1
We looked at Cause-Effect Essays in Unit 6
We practiced outlining a Cause Effect Essay in a group activity.
Final Exam and Portfolio June 10
Exam will be writing a cause effect essay as we have studied the last couple of weeks.
Cause-Effect Essays in Unit 6
Portfolio Reminder:
The portfolio should contain, in the correct chronological order:
Assignment 1 (Open Paragraph): Brainstorming paper, Draft 1 with peer edits, Draft 2 with my edits, Draft 3 with final changes.
Assignment 2 (Comparison Paragraph): Brainstorming paper, Draft 1 with peer edits, Draft 2 with my edits, Draft 3 with final changes.
Assignment 3 (Description Paragraph): Brainstorming paper, Draft 1 with peer edits, Draft 2 with my edits, Draft 3 with final changes.
Assignment 4 (Comparison essay): Brainstorming paper, Draft 1 with peer edits (final two edits are impossible because I have your paper now)
Tips:
Put the portfolio in a clear file type binder, preferably with each part of each assignment in a separate page so it's easy for me to flip through.
Don't worry if your Draft 2 has no peer remarks. Many of these were done in your textbook. It's ok.
If your brainstorming is in your textbook or notebook, please photocopy it. Do not tear it out of your book. If you tear it out, cut the edges to make it clean.
Email me if you have any questions!
